Kirkland's Capital Improvement Program continues to lay the groundwork for a safe, healthy and vibrant community. The projects this program is currently managing to keep our community safe, healthy and vibrant are listed above. 100th Avenue Northeast Corridor Improvements

The City of Kirkland is rebuilding 100th Avenue Northeast, between Northeast 139th and 145th streets, into a more walkable, vibrant and green corridor. The redesigned corridor will feature sidewalk-level bicycle lanes, sidewalks and five lanes for automotive traffic.
The City recently installed a box culvert at Cedar Creek.

124th Avenue Northeast Improvements

The City of Kirkland is improving the 124th Avenue Northeast corridor between Northeast 116th Street and Northeast 124th Street.

132nd Avenue Northeast intersection improvements

A Kirkland contractor plans to begin construction in early February on an intersection project that will improve access in the North Rose Hill neighborhood.

Central Way and NE 124th Street Pedestrian Safety Projects

Modifications to medians on Central and Market Street for pedestrian safety. Adding bicycle lanes to Central Way, and High intensity Activated crossWalK (HAWK) at two locations on NE 124th Street.

Fire Station 21 Renovation

The City of Kirkland is renovating Fire Station 21 to make it more resilient to earthquakes, more efficient for emergency response and more protective of firefighters' health.

Goat Hill Drainage

The City of Kirkland is improving stormwater facilities on Goat Hill.

Juanita Drive Corridor Improvements

The City of Kirkland continues its effort to improve Juanita Drive with a second phase of improvements dedicated to improving travel for driving, walking and bicycling.

Lake Street Pedestrian Scramble Construction Project

Using traffic signals to hold all automotive traffic at each of the intersection’s four legs, people will be able to walk across the intersection in all directions when the pedestrian phase is active.

Neighborhood Safety Program projects

The City of Kirkland leverages the Neighborhood Safety Program to improve safety for walking and bicycling with small-scale projects.

Northeast 73rd Street water main

The City is installing a new eight-inch, ductile iron water main along Northeast 73rd Street.

The new water main will replace the 60-year-old, six-inch concrete water main that has required excessive maintenance for more than a decade.

O.O. Denny Park Improvements Picnic Shelter

The City of Kirkland is adding a new picnic shelter to increase capacity for community members' reservations.

Stores to Shores Greenway

The Stores to Shores Greenway will create a corridor between Heritage Park and Totem Lake, along which walking and bicycling are the prioritized modes of travel and motorized transportation, such as driving a car, is the alternative form of transportation.

NE 85th Street/I-405 Interchange & Inline BRT Station Project - WSDOT

WSDOT, Sound Transit, and design-build contractor Graham Contracting, Ltd. are working to reconstruct and improve the I-405/Northeast 85th Street interchange. This project design supports Sound Transit's Stride Bus Rapid Transit, improves transit connections on Northeast 85th Street, and provides direct access to the I-405 Express Toll Lanes.

CKC to Eastrail Crossing at Slater Ave NE-132nd Ave NE

Installation of a safe crossing to connect the end section of the Cross Kirkland Corridor with the Eastrail at Slater Avenue. Also adds a new right-turn signal for westbound to northbound vehicles on NE 124th Street at Slater Avenue.

Everest Park Restroom Replacement

The City of Kirkland is replacing the Everest Park restroom to ensure it is accessible to everyone and, thus, compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

NE 85th Street Eastbound 3rd Lane - 120th to 122nd Avenues NE

This project builds a new eastbound lane between 120th Ave NE and 122nd Ave NE, creating a right-turn only at 122nd Avenue NE.

NE 85th Street Shared-Use Pathway - 6th Street to 405 Improvements

The City of Kirkland is building a walking and bicycling path along Northeast 85th Street that will connect downtown Kirkland to Interstate 405.

TBD Project: 124th Avenue NE Sidewalk & RRFB

TBD funded project adds sidewalk to a southbound King County Metro bus stop and Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon crossing across 124th Avenue Northeast near Northeast 145th Street.

Transportation Benefit District

The Kirkland City Council is seeking to accelerate 45 projects that will improve safety for walking and bicycling throughout Kirkland by implementing a $20 car tab fee. The goal is to have all projects constructed within six years of the programs genesis, we are currently in Q1 of the third year.

108th Avenue Northeast business access and transit lane

This project will establish a transit-only lane that allows buses to bypass traffic back-ups.

Marina Park Dock and Shoreline Renovations

The City of Kirkland is repairing, upgrading and improving several elements of Marina Park.

Annual projects

Annual Striping Program

The Annual Striping Program maintains markings that identify travel lanes and other guidance markings for auto, pedestrian, bicycle, transit and other forms of transportation.

Overlay (Street Paving)

Kirkland's annual overlay program repaves the City's network of arterial, collector and residential streets.

Slurry Seal

The 2012 Streets Levy is doubling the number of lane miles the City of Kirkland can slurry seal each year. Kirkland has a goal of treating every residential street in the City with slurry seal by the year 2032.

Street Preservation

The goal of Kirkland's annual street preservation program is to keep the City's 600 lane miles of roads in conditions that are cost-effective to maintain and functional for travel. To achieve this, Kirkland repaves, patches or slurry seals up to 40 lane-miles of roads every year.

Northeast 85th Street Eastbound 3rd Lane Project

Drivers should expect night construction east of Interstate 405 on Northeast 85th Street. Traffic control begins by 9 p.m. and ends by 5 a.m. to avoid disruption to Northeast 85th Street. Plan for travel delays due to construction near 122nd Avenue Northeast as Kirkland's contractor resumes work on this project by replacing the waterline and valves. Work on this project is expected throughout spring.

CKC to Eastrail Crossing at Slater Avenue Northeast/132nd Avenue Northeast

Drivers should expect traffic control and plan for construction delays from 132nd Square Park to Northeast 124th Street at Slater Avenue Northeast as Kirkland's contractor resumes work on this project. Work is expected to be complete by Friday (April 10). The signals will be energized in the weeks to come.

Northeast 85th Street: Shared Use Pathway

Drivers on Northeast 85^th Street may encounter Uniformed Police Officers controlling the intersection if watermain construction south of Northeast 85th Street is not complete on-time. The work in the road is expected to be complete on Friday, April 10. Traffic control on 6th Street will shift the lanes on 6^th Street south of Northeast 85^th Street away from the construction trench. Working hours for this activity is 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Northeast 85^th Street continues to usher a single lane of traffic in each direction, between Interstate 405 and Sixth Street while a Kirkland contractor builds a shared-use pathway that parallel’s Northeast 85th Street.

124th Avenue Northeast Pedestrian Improvements

Drivers should expect occasional work on 124th Avenue Northeast near Northeast 145th Street as Kirkland's contractor finishes sidewalk work for this Transportation Benefit District sidewalk and crossing project.

132nd Avenue Northeast Intersection Improvements

Drivers should expect lane shifts and flagging operations on 132nd Avenue Northeast near Northeast 100^th Street as Kirkland's contractor builds a new signalized intersection. Traffic control begins at 9 a.m. and ends by 3:30 p.m. Construction on this project is expected to enter suspension in April as the contractor procures long-lead items.
