Snow, Inclement Weather and Air Quality Policy

The safety of program participants and staff is the primary consideration when determining whether programs should be canceled, rescheduled, or modified due to inclement weather, excessively high or low temperatures, poor or icy road conditions, poor air quality, or other events which may jeopardize safety. The City of Kirkland typically follows the lead of the Lake Washington School District when determining cancellations during the school year. Outside of the school year, City staff will evaluate conditions and make the appropriate decision to cancel, reschedule, or modify programs.

To evaluate air quality, we use the Environmental Protection Agency's website www.airnow.gov, along with their interactive map and smoke map to factor in local sensor data. When air quality index (AQI) reaches unhealthy levels, outdoor classes and programs will typically be canceled, rescheduled, or moved indoors. The Peter Kirk Pool will be closed, and beaches will not be staffed by lifeguards. Refunds will be considered on an individual program basis but are not guaranteed.

Our Inclement Weather Hotline is: 425-587-3335

Program COVID Safety Information and Guidelines

Thank you for registering for a Kirkland Parks & Community Services recreation program! Our top priority is the safety of you, your family and our staff.

  • Participants with any of the following symptoms that are not otherwise explained may not attend recreation programs: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscles or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea. All participants and staff are asked to do a self-assessment of their health before leaving the house.

  • Based on Washington State Department of Health guidelines, if a child has tested positive for COVID-19 they may not attend programs for at least 5 days and symptoms have improved.

  • We ask everyone to wash their hands prior to arrival. Time will be scheduled for handwashing throughout the day.

  • All participants must bring their own water bottle, snacks, and/or lunch. No sharing of food, utensils, or water bottles.

COVID Plan

  • If a child becomes sick with COVID-19 symptoms while in one of our programs, we will notify the family immediately and ask that the child be picked up as soon as possible.

  • The child will be isolated from the rest of the group, made to feel as comfortable as possible, and will remain with a staff member until they can be picked up.

  • If there is a known COVID-19 exposure in our program, participants will be notified.

  • If there is a COVID-19 outbreak within a program, participants may be required to wear a face covering to protect further spread of illness.

  • If, at any time, a participant is unable or unwilling to abide by the City's guidelines and procedures, the City of Kirkland reserves the right to suspend that participant’s registration for the remaining days. In this case, a refund will not be issued for any unattended days.

Resident and Non-Resident Structure

Kirkland residents receive priority registration and pay a resident rate for programs. Registrants who reside in Kirkland are considered residents. The City of Kirkland may request proof of residency.

Registrants who live outside of Kirkland are considered non-residents. Non-residents can sign up for programs when registration opens for non-residents and pay a non-resident rate for programs.
