Domestic Violence Victim Advocate

The Kirkland Police Department has a Domestic Violence Victim Advocate to aid victims for Kirkland, Clyde Hill, Hunts Point, and Yarrow Point cases filed with Kirkland Municipal Court. Kirkland's advocate can be reached Monday through Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by calling (425) 587-3509 or emailing sdawson@kirklandwa.gov.

For victims in Woodinville cases filed with Kirkland Municipal Court, you may email their Domestic Violence Advocate directly. King County's webpage also has some helpful information about domestic violence issues.

The advocate can provide victims with information on the following:

  • Assistance through the legal process for cases filed by the City of Kirkland
  • Accompany victims to court
  • Safety planning
  • Domestic violence prevention and education
  • Referrals to community-based programs
  • Protection order guidance

Modify a No Contact Order Issued by Kirkland Municipal Court

If you are the victim of a court case and would like to modify or terminate the existing No-Contact Order (NCO), you may file a Motion to Modify or Terminate with the Court. Please note that this does not happen on the same day. Your NCO modification will be reviewed by the Judge who has the discretion to schedule your court date. When your court date is scheduled, you and the defendant will need to appear in person at court.

It’s important to have a safety plan completed prior to the scheduled NCO hearing date so you know how you would protect yourself if an incident occurred. If you want help with completing this, please call the Domestic Violence Victim Advocate to schedule a time to meet in person or to discuss your plan over the phone.

Reporting a Protection Order Violation

  • If you feel an immediate threat to your safety, call 911.
  • If you don’t feel an immediate threat to your safety and wish to report a No Contact Order or Protection Order violation that occurred within Kirkland City limits, please call the non-emergency police line at (425) 577-5656.

Obtaining a Protection Order

If a Domestic Violence Protection Order is right for your situation, you can reach out to the King County Protection Order Advocates. Their team can help walk you through the process of how to obtain an order. You can call them directly at (206) 477-3758 to schedule a time to start the process.

Victim Rights

King County’s Victim Assistance provides those who are victims of a crime the bills of rights and resources they might need.

Language Assistance Plan

Washington State law upholds the rights of deaf persons and of other persons who because of impairment of hearing or speech are unable to readily understand or communicate spoken English and who consequently cannot be fully protected in legal proceedings unless qualified interpreters are available to assist them.  Washington State law also secures the rights of persons who because of a non-English speaking cultural background are unable to readily understand or communicate in English and who consequently cannot be fully protected in legal proceedings unless qualified interpreters are available to assist them.

Municipal courts are guided by the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 2.42 and 2.43 as well as the Language Assistance Plan(PDF, 298KB) (LAP).  Kirkland Municipal Court provides interpreter services, free of charge, to limited English proficient (LEP) as well as deaf and hearing-impaired persons.  To request an interpreter, please contact the Kirkland Municipal Court at 425-587-3160.

What is the Difference Between an Interpreter and Translator?

An interpreter is orally conveying a message from one language to another.  Interpretation is spoken or signed.

A translator is transferring a written text (books, articles, forms) from one language to another. Translation is written.

Court Interpreters are Not

  • Advocates
  • Consultants on culture or customs
  • Translators

The rules for court interpreters can be found under the Interpreters Code of Conduct(PDF, 18KB).

If you have any questions or concerns about interpreters or would like to be added as an interpreting contact then feel free to notify the court either online or by phone 425-587-3160.
