This year’s focus is on using lithium-ion batteries safely.
From phones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools, anything with a lithium-ion battery can become a fire hazard if it’s not charged safely. Always use the charger that came with your device (or one approved by the manufacturer).
If your charging cable only works when you bend it just right, it’s time for a new one!
We just made you a little more aware of stormwater! This week we're celebrating Stormwater Awareness Week. What is stormwater? Stormwater = rainwater; it's simpler than it sounds.
So why should you care and be aware? Kirkland's stormwater and sewer pipes are separated. The water from your sink flows down a path to a treatment facility before being discharged into Lake Washington.
However, the water that goes down the drain? That goes directly into our waters, untreated, ala 'Do not pass "GO," do not collect $200."
Now you know! Wanna know more? Read our blog post: https://cityofkirklandblogs.com/environmentalservices/2025/10/happy-stormwater-awareness-week-2025
To celebrate Stormwater Awareness Week, the team at Kirkland is hosting a story time for kiddos (see details below), and adding cute rain-activated art to Peter Kirk Park, Kirkland Middle, and John Muir Elementary.
Stormwater Storytime
Book Selection: “Little Beaver and the Echo.” There will be puppets! There will be songs! There will be silliness!
Where: Kingsgate Library, 12315 NE 143rd St 98034
Date: October 10, 2025
Time: 10:30 a.m.

Last week was a Week Without Driving. Participants of all kinds chose to replace their time behind the wheel with alternative forms of transportation. The point wasn’t to prove the quality of the region’s transit, walkability, or bicycling savvy, but to draw attention to the challenges that non-drivers contend with every day. Though it may have been relatively easy for some, reliable access to public transit and safe routes to school and work made giving up driving much more challenging for others.
Now that WWD has concluded, we’re interested in not only hearing about participants’ experiences, but also their ideas for making our region friendlier and more accessible for both drivers and non-drivers at the same time.
- What was the most frequent challenge you encountered as a non-driver?
- What do you think is the biggest barrier to giving up your car?
- Can you easily get to the things you need without driving?
- Did you feel safe as a non-driver?
- What could authorities in our region do to make getting around more accessible? What could they try that they haven’t?
You’ve had some time to reflect. Join the discussion and post your images and videos. When you post your thoughts on social media, please use #WeekWithoutDriving. Most importantly, share what you learned and what you think we all can do to make getting around work for everyone.
Kirkland Police Cadet Car Show

A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who participated, volunteered, and stopped by to make this year’s show such a success. Your support helps inspire the next generation of first responders!
Thank You for Another Great Market Season
