The Peter Kirk Pool.

The Peter Kirk Pool is the City of Kirkland's outdoor heated seasonal pool. A wading pool for young swimmers is located next to the main pool.

Participants of all ages can take advantage of our classes and programs including swim lessons, lap swim, public swim, swim team, water safety courses, water exercise, and others. Classes and programs are available throughout the summer season.

We also have three swimming beaches at Houghton Beach, Waverly Beach, and Juanita Beach. For lifeguard hours and more information on our swimming beaches, please visit the Guarded Swim Beaches section below.

The Peter Kirk Pool accepts Cash, Check, and Visa or Mastercard.

Each entrant into Peter Kirk Pool must pay for admission. This includes all ages, regardless of whether or not they will be swimming or accessing the pool deck. This also includes all non-swimmers entering the pool facility.

The cashier window is not open during swim lessons or rentals. The Peter Kirk Pool cashier window opens 10 minutes before the first swim time. The cashier window closes 15 minutes before the end of the last public swim session ends.

Pool Passes: Pool passes can be purchased or renewed online at http://kirklandparks.net and can be picked up at the Pool Office during any Public Swim or Lap Swim time. All 2025 pool passes were deactivated at the end of the 2025 season. You may reactivate any previous season pool pass for the 2026 season and use the same card as you did for last season upon pass renewal.

Are you looking to register for swim lessons, deep water exercise, pool rentals, or any other aquatics program? You will need to register for these programs online, over the phone (425-587-3336) or in person at the Peter Kirk Community Center. Please note: The Peter Kirk Pool does not process registrations/withdraws for aquatic programs.

Main Pool Rules & Facility Guidelines 

To ensure a safe, clean, and enjoyable environment for all guests, the following rules apply to all patrons.

Supervision & Access 

  • Swimming is allowed only when lifeguards are on duty. Please wait for a lifeguard before entering the water. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not present. 

  • To maintain a safe and welcoming environment, Aquatics Staff have full authority to enforce all facility rules. Patrons who do not adhere to these rules may be asked to leave without refund. 

  • Children 10 years of age and under must be accompanied by an adult (18+) to enter the facility. 

  • Children 6 years of age and under must be directly supervised in the water by an adult (18+) and remain within arm’s reach at all times. A maximum of three (3) children age 6 and under is permitted in the water per supervising adult. 

  • Children 12 years of age and under must successfully complete the Deep Water Swim Test to access the deep end or diving well. 

  • Non-swimmers under age 13 must remain in shallow (chest-deep) water unless accompanied by a parent/guardian in water no deeper than the parent/guardian’s chest. 

Safety & Conduct 

  • Please walk on the pool deck and in the locker rooms. Running on the pool deck is prohibited. Pool decks and locker room floors may be slippery when wet.  

  • Pushing, dunking, throwing objects, horseplay, excessive splashing, carrying another person on your back, and other unsafe behaviors are not permitted. 

  • Prolonged underwater swimming or breath-holding activities are prohibited. 

  • Fighting, harassment, vandalism, violent behavior, inappropriate language, and inappropriate public displays of affection are not permitted. 

Diving & Water Entry 

  • Diving is allowed only in designated diving areas.  

  • Diving in shallow water or ‘No Diving’ areas is prohibited. Please do not dive in these areas. 

  • All jumps from the pool deck must be forward and feet first. Flips, back dives, twists, and jumping or playing on diving blocks are not allowed. 

  • Ladders, handrails, and chair lifts are to be used for entering and exiting the pool only. 

Swim Attire Guidelines 

  • All patrons must wear family-friendly swimwear.  

  • Thongs or overly revealing swimsuits are not allowed.  

  • Denim, cotton clothing, and cut-off shorts are not permitted in the pools. 

Health & Hygiene 

  • Diseases and Illness: Patrons with communicable diseases or illnesses within the last two (2) weeks shall not use the pool. This may include but is not limited to persons having skin lesions, sore or inflamed eyes, mouth, nose or ear discharge or diarrhea or vomiting (per State Health Code). 

  • Infants and toddlers who are not toilet trained must wear a swim diaper and a tight-fitting protective cover (per State Health Code). 

  • Disposable diapers are not permitted in the pool. They must be changed in the designated locker room areas. 

  • Anyone with seizure, heart, or circulatory problems should swim with a buddy and alert the staff in case of emergency. 

  • Animals are not permitted on the premises, with the exception of service dogs. Service animals may not enter the water. 

Food & Beverages 

  • Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are permitted in designated areas only. 

  • No food or beverages other than water are allowed on the pool deck or in the water. 

  • Alcohol, tobacco products, electronic cigarettes, and drugs are prohibited. 

  • Individuals under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be denied entry or removed from the facility. 

  • Glass containers and gum are prohibited. 

Locker Room Rules and Etiquette

  • Children 6 and under may not be left unattended in the locker rooms. 

  • Photography or video recording is strictly prohibited in locker rooms. 

  • Food or drink are not allowed inside the locker rooms. 

  • The City of Kirkland is not responsible for items lost or stolen from the locker rooms. 

  • Items left behind or in the lost and found for more than one week may be donated. 

Water Toys, Swim Goggles, & Flotation Devices 

  • Water toys will be allowed at the discretion of the lifeguard on duty. 

  • Large floatation devices are not permitted in the pool unless otherwise noted for special events.  

  • Small personal floatation devices may be permitted at the lifeguard’s discretion. 

  • Snorkels and masks that cover the nose are not allowed. Standard swim goggles that do not cover the nose are allowed. 

  • Mermaid suits, mono-fins, water wings, and any flotation devices not approved by the U.S. Coast Guard are not allowed. 

Life Jacket Loaner Stations

  • Coast Guard–approved life jackets are available during all public swim sessions. To borrow a life jacket, please speak with any lifeguard on duty at the lifeguard office. 

  • Children wearing a life jacket must be supervised by a parent/guardian at all times. 

  • Parent/guardian must be within arm’s reach of children wearing a life jacket. 

  • Parents may take children wearing a life jacket only into water that does not exceed chest depth. 

  • Life jackets are not permitted in the diving well or off the diving board. 

Public Swim Lap Lane Rules 

  • The public swim lap lane is designated for lap swimming only. 

  • Swimmers must be actively swimming laps to use the lap lane during public swim times. 

  • Water walking, water jogging, aqua fitness exercises, and the use of aqua joggers are not permitted in the lap lane. 

  • Patrons interested in water walking, aqua jogging, or aqua fitness exercises may use the deep-water swimming area adjacent to the lap lane. 

Lap Lane Etiquette

  • Please be respectful and aware of others sharing the lane. 

  • Circle swimming is required when two or more swimmers are in a lane. 

  • Always swim counterclockwise, staying to the right side of the lane, close to the lane rope. 

  • Swimmers entering a lane must make sure others are aware they are joining and confirm the traffic pattern. 

  • All swimmers must share the lane. 

  • Safe swimming is everyone’s responsibility. 

  • Taking Breaks: Do not stop in the middle of the lane. 

  • To take a break, you must: Exit the water, sit on the pool edge, or move completely out of the lap lane. 

Lap Lane Equipment Guidelines  

The following equipment is permitted while actively lap swimming: Kickboards, Pull buoys, Masks, Fins, Snorkels, Hand paddles 

  • Snorkels & Fins: Snorkels and fins are allowed for lap swimming. Fins must be removed before exiting the pool. Walking on the pool deck while wearing fins is not permitted. 

  • Kickboards: Kickboards are available during lap swim, lessons, and swim team. Do not sit, stand, or throw kickboards. Do not use kickboards on diving blocks. 

IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY: Call 911 

  • Emergency phone is located in the Lifeguard Office.

  • Only pool staff are authorized to adjust the Diving Board fulcrum. 

Diving Board, Splashdown Area, and Diving Well Safety Rules 

  • Life jackets are not permitted on the diving board or in the diving well. 

  • Goggles may not be worn on the diving board. 

  • Walking is required on and around the diving board area. 

  • One person on the board at a time. 

  • One bounce per dive. 

  • Jump straight from the front of the board. 

  • The following behavior is not permitted on the diving board: 

  • Cartwheels, handstands, running dives, flipping, and sit dives. 

  • Hanging off the Diving Board. 

  • Jumping off of the board into someone’s arms. 

  • The splashdown area must be clear before the next person climbs the stairs. 

  • After entering the water, swim directly to the nearest ladder and exit the area. 

  • No swimming or playing in the splashdown area or under the board unless the board is closed.

  • The wading pool is for children 6 years and under and their parents/guardians.

  • Maximum of 3 children (6 & under) per supervising adult in the water. 

Pool Safety 

  • Enter the pool feet first; diving is not allowed in the Wading Pool. 

  • All patrons should avoid swallowing the pool water or allowing water into their mouth. 

  • Spitting or discharge of any bodily waste is prohibited in the pool. 

Infants & Toddlers

Lap Swim is open to ages 13 and older. Swimmers ages 13–15 must have a parent or guardian present during Morning or Evening Lap Swim. 

Lap Lane Etiquette 

  • Lane Capacity: 4 swimmers per lane.  

  • All swimmers must share lanes. 

  • Please be respectful and aware of others sharing the lane. 

  • Safe swimming is everyone’s responsibility. 

  • Swim in a lane that matches your speed. 
       Move to a faster lane if you are faster than others. 
       Move to a slower lane if you are slower than others. 

  • Do not stop in the middle of the lane. To take a break, you must: Exit the water, sit on the pool edge, or move completely out of the lap lane. 

Circle Swimming 

  • Circle swimming is required when two or more swimmers are in a lane. 

  • Always swim counterclockwise, staying to the right side of the lane, close to the lane rope.

  • Always swim complete laps. 

  • When turning or finishing, stay to the right side of the lane. 

  • If standing at the wall, stand to the right (when facing the wall). 

  • If a faster swimmer is approaching as you reach the wall, pause and allow them to pass. 

  • Maintain appropriate spacing and avoid drafting.

Class Etiquette 

  • Only registered participants may attend class. We cannot add students once registration has closed. 

  • Lessons begin promptly at the scheduled start time. 

  • Students must wait for their instructor to invite them into the water. 

  • While in the pool, students must remain with their instructor at all times. 

  • Diving blocks may only be used under direct instructor supervision. 

  • Students must exit the pool immediately when the lesson ends. Instructors will ensure all students are out of the water before leaving the class area. 

  • There is no public swimming during lessons unless otherwise specified. 

Swim Lesson Tips 

  • Hair ties are recommended for students with long hair. 

  • Goggles are optional but may be recommended for more advanced levels. 

  • Bring two towels: one for the pool deck and one for the locker room. 

  • Every child develops at their own pace. It is normal for beginner swimmers to feel nervous or upset. Please be patient, consistent, and encouraging.

Kirkland Orca Swim Team and Craze Summer Swim League

Kirkland Orca Swim Team and Craze Summer Swim League

Ages: 6-17

The City of Kirkland offers a recreational swim team that participates in the Craze Summer Swim League. This league focuses on developing fundamental skills and instilling the value of a recreational activity that lasts a lifetime.  

Returning Orca Swimmers: 
If your child swam on the Orca Swim Team last season, they may return without a tryout. Registration for returning swimmers opens March 18 for Kirkland residents and March 19 for non-residents. Swim Team Returner registration will close on June 4.  Register your child online at www.kirklandparks.net or by calling Loni Rotter at 425-587-3333. 

New Orca Swimmers: 
If your child did not swim on the Orca Swim Team last season, they must try out for the 2026 team. Please do not register them for the team unless they have passed tryouts. See the tryout information below for details. 

Swim Team Tryouts Reservation:  
You don’t have to register for tryouts, but we highly recommend it, this helps us plan for the number of swimmers. Registering does not guarantee a spot on the team. Tryouts are grouped by age, and the lottery drawing happens 10 minutes after the tryout window ends. This is the only tryout date; no make-ups will be offered. 

Tryout Requirements (Age as of July 1, 2026): Swimmers should show strong swimming skills and rhythmic breathing

 Ages 6–8: Swim 25 yards front crawl and 25 yards backstroke without stopping or using the wall. 

 Ages 9–17: Swim 50 yards front crawl, 50 yards backstroke, and 25 yards breaststroke without stopping or using the wall. 

Swim Team Tryout – Team Placement: 

After passing tryouts, swimmers are entered into a lottery by age and gender. If your child is selected, payment and registration will be required on-site to be placed on the team.

Kirkland AquaLeaders Program

Develop lifeguard and swim instructor skills, while building leadership experience that can be applied to a variety of occupations. AquaLeaders receive training and instruction in facility rules, policies and procedures, water safety and swim lesson instruction. Completion of the program is a prerequisite to volunteer as a Junior Lifeguard and/or Swim Instructor Aide for the Kirkland Aquatic Service Program, weekdays in July and August.

Guarded Swimming Beaches

We have three guarded swimming beaches, Houghton Beach, Waverly Beach and Juanita Beach. All beaches have designated swim areas marked and all lifeguard offices offer a free lifejacket loaner program. All children 12 and under must pass an open water swim test before crossing the shallow water buoy line.

Lifeguards are on duty daily from 12 PM–6 PM, July 1–September 7. Note: No lifeguards will be on duty Mon, August 31 – Fri, September 4. All beaches will have beach rules and lifeguard on duty signs will be posted when lifeguards are on duty.

Camps and Groups larger than 15 are encouraged to contact the City of Kirkland 48 hours in advance of an intended visit. Please use our Kirkland Beach Group Notice Form (Link: https://us.openforms.com/Form/f91efc7c-9d21-4595-a265-3eee754ddaf9 ). This form will allow us to notify out waterfront staff of your arrival and any information they may need for the day.

Beach Bacteria Testing: Beaches are tested weekly by King County for water quality. If bacteria levels are high, the swimming area will be closes, and no lifeguards will be on duty.  Check Current water quality at https://kingcounty.gov/swimbeach

Waterfront swim test: At Houghton, Waverly, and Juanita Beaches, children 12 and under must pass a waterfront swim test to swim beyond the shallow water buoy line. Due to changing lake conditions, swimmers need to test daily. Visist our swimming beaches webpage for more information.

Sprinkler Park

Looking for a FUN, FREE way to cool off? Cool off this summer at Lee Johnson Field!

Our free-family-friendly Sprinkler Park features a variety of sprinklers for al ages to enjoy.  We offer a variety of sprinklers, suitable for all ages, set up for everyone to enjoy! This program is free for all ages and takes place on Thursdays during July and August at Lee Johnson Field at Peter Kirk Park.

When: Thursdays 11:00 AM-2:00 PM from Thu, July 9 – Thu, August 6.
Where: Lee Johnson Field (202 3rd Street, Kirkland, WA 98033)

Temperatures must be above 70 degrees for Sprinkler Parks to be open. Our Facebook page or Instagram page and our inclement weather hotline (425-587-3335) will be updated in the event that sprinkler park is cancelled for the day.

Parking is available in the parking garage under the library.

All children 10 and under must be supervised by an adult. No registration required.

Fees are based on hours of use and include set up and take down. Lifeguards, pool toys and party deck space included in rental. Rentals must be made at least 14 days in advance. Pool Rentals may be booked beginning Sat, June 6, 2026 for:

Friday, Saturday, or Sunday Evenings: 5:30-8:30 PM
Sunday Mornings: 10:00-11:30AM

Reservation Occupancy:

Please register the total number of people at your party when booking. Refunds are available only for lightning, thunder, or poor air quality. Refunds are not available for other weather conditions.

  • “Over 150” rates apply only if your party exceeds 150 people. 

  • Wading Pool maximum capacity: 40 people (over-150 pricing does not apply).

 AQUATIC STAFF/LIFEGUARDS

  • Aquatic Staff on duty are always in charge, and the adults in attendance with their group are expected to support the Aquatic Staff in the enforcement of all rules and regulations.
  • Lifeguards are not responsible for providing supervision of children; lifeguards are responsible for enforcingsafety rules, performing lifeguard duties, and responding to emergencies.
  • Adult parents/guardians are primarily responsible for the supervising the children/group.
  • The number of lifeguards scheduled during your party is based on the number of people you have in your groupand the areas you wish to use. All pool rules apply.
  • Children 6 and under requires an adult to be in the water with them, at all times

HIGHLIGHTED POOL RENTAL RULES

  • All pool rules are in effect.
  • Children 6 and under require an adult to be in the water with them, at all times.
  •  Infants and toddlers who are not potty-trained must wear a swim diaper and have a tight-fitting protective covering (Per State Health Code)
  •  Pool Floats and/or Inflatables are not allowed; our pool only permits Coast Guard approved lifejackets.
  •  Water toys are allowed at the lifeguard’s discretion.
  •  Renters are not allowed to store food or drink the lifeguard office due to staff with severe allergies.
  •  Glass is not permitted in the facility.
  •  All swimmers 12 years and younger must be able to pass the swim test to swim in the deep end or use the
    diving board of the main pool.

FOOD, BEVERAGE, & DECORATIONS

  • Rental hours include time for your set-up and clean–up.
  •  Renters are not allowed to store food or drink the lifeguard office due to staff with severe allergies.
  •  Areas permitted for Food and Drink:

             Wading Pool: Grass Area
             Main Pool: Upper Deck

  • All food must be prepared before entering the facility, no food preparation/cooking will be allowed inside the facility.
  •  All food, decorations, and supplies brought into the facility by renters are to be removed by the end of the rental period.
  • Decorations must be provided by the renter, and shall be limited to balloons, tablecloths, party favors and flowers. Hanging decorations from the fence or tent wall is allowed.
  • We do not allow sidewalk chalk, paint/dye (masking tape OK), tacks, duct tape, staples, wire, or putty; as well as confetti and/or glitter.
  • The Peter Kirk Pool does not provide power for the renter, please do not bring in anything that will require an outlet.

PROHIBITED ITEMS

  • Smoking and alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited.
  • No live amplified music, candles or open flames are allowed. (Birthday cake candles ok)
  • Grills/BBQs, Pizza Ovens, and other food preparation appliances are not permitted in the facility.
  • Glass is not permitted in the facility.

RENTER’S RESPONSIBILITIES

Renter must attend the event and assume responsibility for all activities conducted during the rental.

  •  Renters shall be responsible for obtaining and maintaining at no cost to the City, all licenses, permits, and other authorizations required to legally conduct rental activities.
  • Renter must check out with Aquatics team before leaving to make sure all items have been packed up.
  • One group Supervisor must be designated by the rental party to act as the liaison to the Aquatic Safety Team.
  • The Group Supervisor must be at least 21 years of age or older. Additional adults must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • Direct supervision of children by adults must always be maintained while group is in and/or near the water.
    Adults must always have visual contact with the children in their group, including the locker rooms before, during and after the visit.
  • Supervision is defined as being able to see/hear/discipline the children that the adult is directly responsible for watching. Adults must ensure that the children are abiding all facility rules and are encouraged to review facility rules upon each visit.
  • The group Supervisor must inform the Aquatics Staff of any medical problems that may exist with any of the group members prior to entering the pool.
  • Ratio of adult to children:

       1 Adult to 6 children between the ages of 7-13 
       1 Adult in swim attire in water to 3 children 6 years of age and under
