Kirkland Hosts First-Ever “Junk in the Trunk” Community Sale

Discover hidden gems and shop sustainably at our first-ever Junk in the Trunk Community Sale, happening Saturday, May 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Houghton Park & Play.

This unique, vehicle trunk-based community sale offers a fun opportunity to explore secondhand treasures, reduce waste, and connect with neighbors. Community sellers will offer a wide variety of gently used items and vintage finds from their trunks and the space next to their vehicles.

“Events like Junk in the Trunk show how small actions can support a more sustainable future,” said Councilmember Jon Pascal. “By reusing and repurposing items instead of throwing them away, we’re making a positive impact on our environment and having a great time doing it.”

Hear All About How Safety's Brewing in Kirkland Over Tea with Transportation

We all want safe streets. Curious about how Kirkland plans to make its streets even safer? You’re invited to Tea with Transportation, an open house where you can provide feedback and chat with the City’s Transportation Team about the Kirkland Safety Action Plan over a warm cup of tea.

“There’s no such thing as being too safe when it comes to transportation,” said Councilmember John Tymczyszyn. “Even small improvements can have a huge impact, and the best ideas often come from the people who walk, bike, and drive these streets every day.”

The open house takes place on Wednesday, May 14, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Kirkland City Hall Council Chambers (123 5th Avenue). It’s a relaxed evening of meaningful conversation. Drop by, meet your neighbors, and learn how the City is working to make every trip – whether on foot, by bike, bus, or car – safer for everyone.

Calling Artful Youth

Seeking Youth to Serve on Kirkland’s Cultural Arts Commission

Are you – or do you know – a youth who’s passionate about art? Want to make an impact and serve your community? The City is accepting applications for a youth seat on the Kirkland Cultural Arts Commission (KCAC) until May 16, 2025.

The KCAC is a volunteer board appointed by the City Council that advises the Council on art acquisition, promotes strategic arts planning, and manages the City's public art collection. They also work to grow and support arts, culture, and heritage in Kirkland. The Commission meets on the third Wednesday of every month.

Kirkland community members who meet eligibility requirements are invited to apply to the City Clerk by 4 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2025. Visit the Current Recruitment Positions page or call the City Clerk’s Office at 425-587-3190 to learn more and apply.

Members of most advisory boards and commissions are appointed by the City Council. City Council interviews for potential members are anticipated to be scheduled for the week of May 26th, 2025.

Kirkland Fire Stations Glow Red to Honor Fallen Firefighters

If you’ve seen Kirkland’s fire stations glowing red this week, it’s part of Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters — a national tribute organized by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. From April 27 to May 4, four of Kirkland’s fire stations are lit in red to honor firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

For Kirkland, this remembrance is personal. The lights shine in honor of Firefighter Terence Goldberg, who passed away in 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. His service, leadership, and dedication left a lasting impact on the department and community. He is remembered at both the Washington State Capitol Memorial and the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial in Colorado.
