Every year, firefighters from Kirkland and across the country take on the challenge of climbing 1,356 steps (69 floors with an elevation gain of 788 feet) at Seattle’s Columbia Center, all while wearing full bunker gear. The LLS Firefighter Stairclimb isn’t just a test of endurance; it’s a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society whose mission is to cure blood cancer and improve the quality of life of all patients and their families.
On March 9, sixteen Kirkland Firefighters stepped up to the challenge, each raising at least $300 to participate. The team collectively raised $16,496 -- $6,000 of which came from generous community donations during a Fill the Boot campaign. Firefighters Jay and Keenan led the way as the team’s fastest climbers, and half of the team finished in the top 12% of all competitors.
Thank you to everyone who supported our firefighters in this incredible challenge!
Declutter responsibly at Kirkland’s WM Recycle Right Event on Saturday, April 5 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. (or until trucks are full). Drop off textiles, electronics, and confidential paper shredding for free! Open to Kirkland residents only. For full event details, including a list of items accepted and not accepted, visit the event webpage: https://www.kirklandwa.gov/Whats-Happening/Community-Events/Public-Works-Department-Events/Spring-RRE
Did You Know? Shredded paper can’t go in your home recycling or yard waste cart. The tiny pieces create litter at recycling centers and often contain plastic bits, making them unsuitable for composting. Instead, bag it and toss it in the trash—or better yet, take it to a free shred event where it can be properly recycled (hint: the April 5 event will have shredding services). To reduce waste, only shred what contains sensitive info and recycle the rest. Learn more and find other shredding resources and events on our Shredding webpage: https://www.kirklandwa.gov/Government/Departments/Public-Works-Department/Solid-Waste-Services/Recycle/Beyond-the-Cart/Shredding
