First Beach Closure of the Season

Beginning May 20, 2025, Public Health – Seattle & King County is recommending that people and pets stay out of the water at Juanita Beach Park for at least one week due to elevated bacteria levels. Signs will be positioned to indicate that people and pets should stay out of the water. The rest of Juanita Beach Park remains open.

Water quality staff from the King County Water and Land Resources Division tested the water recently and found that the levels of bacteria at these beaches exceeded safe thresholds for bacteria based on the samples collected. King County crews will return to the beaches next week to collect further samples.

Why Kirkland Has a Senior Council

CORRECTION: At the City of Kirkland, we’re committed to creating a community where older adults can thrive. That’s why we’re excited for the opportunity to apply to become a certified AARP Age-Friendly City.
(Originally published: “Kirkland is proud to be an AARP and WHO-certified Age-Friendly City.”)
Because when a city works well for older adults, it works better for everyone. The Kirkland Senior Council helps shape that vision by advocating for accessible design, inclusive services, and programs that support aging in place, independence, and lifelong engagement.

Invested in Kirkland—and Still Giving

Senior Council members say it best: older adults have invested so much in this community, and it’s important they continue to feel connected, supported, and valued. A community that supports its seniors builds resilience, health, and joy for all generations. Scam Alert PSA from Kirkland Police

The Kirkland Police Department is alerting the community about a concerning scam in which individuals are pretending to be law enforcement officers—using the real names and ranks of actual officers—to defraud residents.

In recent cases, scammers have contacted individuals claiming they missed federal jury duty and now face legal consequences, including warrants for arrest. Victims are then instructed to pay a so-called “security fee” to resolve the issue or clear the warrant, often through untraceable methods like Venmo, Bitcoin ATM's or gift cards.

These scammers sound professional and convincing. One recent victim reported being contacted by someone impersonating a Kirkland Police Lieutenant. The caller provided an official-sounding story and even transferred the victim to multiple “officers” as part of the ruse. Unfortunately, the scam resulted in the victim losing hundreds of dollars.

Please remember:

- Kirkland Police officers will never demand payment over the phone.

- Law Enforcement officers will not ask you to use Venmo, gift cards, bitcoin (or other cryptocurrency) or wire transfers to resolve warrants or legal issues.

Scammers exploit trust and fear. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. Hang up and call us directly using our official number, which can be found on the City of Kirkland's website: (425) 587-3400. If you’ve received a similar call or think you may be a victim of fraud, please report it to local law enforcement.

Lawn and Order: Wildfire Prevention Edition

May is Wildfire Awareness Month. 🔥 Although Kirkland isn’t considered high risk for wildfires, Kirkland Fire crews train to respond to wildland fires, which can happen in areas with dry vegetation.

You can do your part to help reduce fire risk at your home in the summer months.

✅ Trim back branches that hang over roofs or touch your home

✅ Clear out dead plants, leaves, and pine needles from yards and gutters

✅ Keep grass mowed and watered

✅ Store firewood and propane tanks away from structures

It feels good to cross yardwork off the list—and even better knowing it helps reduce your fire risk, too. Get more tips on preparing your home against wildfire here: https://www.nfpa.org/education-and-research/wildfire/preparing-homes-for-wildfire

Kicking Off Grilling Season Safely

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of grilling season in the Pacific Northwest, and many of us are ready to enjoy some well-deserved time outdoors with family, friends, and food. As you dust off the grill for the season, the Kirkland Fire Department encourages everyone to follow a few simple safety tips to help keep your gatherings safe and fire-free:

  • Never leave the grill unattended.
  • Grill outdoors only. Keep grills well away from siding, deck railings, eaves, and overhanging branches.
  • Inspect before you ignite. Check propane tanks and hoses for leaks or damage before use. Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose. A propane leak will release bubbles.
  • Establish a safety zone. Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grill area.
  • Clean regularly. Built-up grease and fat are a leading cause of grill fires—clean the grill and the trays below the grill thoroughly before each use.

Traffic Alerts

Slater Avenue Northeast/132nd Avenue Northeast at Cross Kirkland Corridor

Slater/132nd Avenues Northeast is permanently reduced to a single lane heading north from Northeast 124th Street to Northeast 126th Place. This is consistent with Slater Avenue Northeast to the South and 132nd Avenue to the North. Drivers will encounter traffic control and heavy equipment as this project creates a signalized crossing from the end of the Cross Kirkland Corridor trail to King County’s Eastrail, as well as more pedestrian and bicyclist improvements. Construction is expected to be completed this fall. Visit https://www.kirklandwa.gov/Government/Departments/Public-Works-Department/Construction-Projects/CKC-to-Eastrail-Crossing-at-Slater-Ave-NE-132nd-Ave-NE for project updates on Thursdays.

98th Avenue Northeast

Drivers will encounter a single northbound lane reduction on 98th Avenue Northeast from the Forbes Creek Bridge to Northeast 110th Street as Kirkland’s contractor builds new sidewalk to connect to the neighborhood with Market Street. Additionally, a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) will be added by this project to the Market Street intersection with 19th Avenue/19th Avenue West crossing. Work at both these locations will occur from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to avoid most commuter traffic. This project is funded by the Transportation Benefit District.

124th Avenue Northeast

Work continues on the east side of the street on 124th Avenue Northeast, between Northeast 116th Street and Northeast 124th Street. Paving is commencing, which will required some business driveways to be closed for a few hours as the asphalt sets. Drivers exiting businesses will encounter “Right Turn Only” access to 124th Avenue Northeast. Bicyclists will merge with traffic. This project is on schedule to be finished in June. Visit www.kirklandwa.gov/124thavenue for project updates on Thursdays.

100th Avenue Northeast

OMA Construction may briefly alternating traffic at various locations or if necessary, briefly stop traffic between Northeast 137th and 145th streets. The legal speed limit through the construction zone is 25 miles per hour. Visit www.kirklandwa.gov/100thavedesign for project updates on Thursdays.

Juanita Drive

Juanita Drive may be reduced to one lane between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Northeast 124th Street to Northeast 128th Street with flaggers controlling the flow of traffic. Paving is complete, with typical paving tasks remaining (utility raising, permanent striping after a few weeks of asphalt curing, etc.) Visit www.kirklandwa.gov/juanitadrivecorridor for project updates on Thursdays.

Eighth Avenue West

Kirkland’s contractor is rehabilitating the remainder of Eighth Avenue West. Sections of Eighth Avenue West will be closed as the work moves east. This work is weather dependent but progressing nicely. Visit https://www.kirklandwa.gov/Government/Departments/Public-Works-Department/Construction-Projects/Eighth-Avenue-West-water-and-sewer-main-upgrades for project updates on Thursdays.

Northeast 132nd Street

Kirkland's contractor is returning to complete maintenance work on the stormwater system on Northeast 132nd Street’s intersection with 120th Avenue Northeast. A uniformed police officer will control the intersection when work impacts the intersection, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Work is expected to be complete in mid-June.
