Any pet owners that license their pets during the Covid-19 emergency proclamation will have all late fees waived. Pet owners will also not have to provide proof of rabies vaccination if they do not have it available at the time of licensing. These temporary changes are to help make it easier for people to license their pets during this challenging time.

pet-license-tag.jpgBy law, all dogs and cats twelve weeks old and older owned by Kirkland residents must be licensed and vaccinated against rabies. Licenses expire after one year and must be renewed on or before the date of expiration.

Pet licenses provide identification if a family pet is lost and allow a quick reunification once the animal is found. If your pet is found and has a license, our Animal Control Officer will attempt to reunite you with your pet immediately, so you don’t have to go to the animal shelter to pick it up. The fees collected from pet licenses go directly into Kirkland’s Animal Services Program to provide service, education and enforcement.

Kirkland pet owners have three different options available to obtain a license, making it easier than ever to license your pet.

To license online:

Step 2.2. Select “License Now”

Step 3.3. Click “Online.”

You can license multiple pets at the same time and easily upload required documents. All major credit cards are accepted, and a small convenience fee will apply per transaction.

Mail

Step 1.Download the application.

Download application.

Step 2.Gather required documents.

  • A current rabies vaccination certificate is required.  If your pet’s rabies vaccination has expired, you must upload this document.  Please check your certificate for correct address and pet information. 
  • Proof of spay/neuter, such as a signed statement from a veterinarian or an invoice for services is required if the pet has been altered since the last licensing period and you are applying for the lower spayed/neutered license fee. 
  • Proof of age is required to receive the discounted fees for senior citizens age 65 and over.

Please note: Your paperwork will not be returned to you, so please retain a copy of your documents for your records.

Step 3.Complete the application.

Step 5.Write a check or money order.

Make check payable to City of Kirkland (please do not send cash).

The cost for licensing unaltered or fertile pets is higher than for licensing spayed or neutered pets in order to promote sterilization and to reduce pet overpopulation.
