Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology relies on closed circuit television cameras and fiber optic cable to create a coordinated network of traffic signals that convey real-time images of traffic to Kirkland's traffic engineers in the City Hall-based Transportation Management Center. From there, engineers can monitor and, if necessary, adjust signal-timing in real-time.

Commuters can monitor real-time road conditions by viewing traffic camera screenshots that refresh approximately once per minute.

The City has upgraded traffic signals at intersections in Totem Lake, along Lake Washington Boulevard, Lake Street, Market Street, 98th Avenue Northeast, Central Way and Northeast 85th Street.
