The City of Kirkland is planning to begin construction on a project that will improve downtown Kirkland's walking conditions.

The project, funded by the Transportation Benefit District, will improve four crosswalks and rebuild the sidewalk on the north side of Kirkland Avenue, between the Kirkland Library and the Kirkland Performance Center.

The crosswalks are on Kirkland Avenue, Lake and State streets.

The Lake Street crosswalks are at Second and Fifth avenues south.

The State Street crosswalk is near Second Avenue South.

And the Kirkland Avenue crosswalk is at the Kirkland Performance Center.

To rebuild the sidewalk, Kirkland's contractor will need to remove a dozen street trees; 10 of which line the sidewalk.

The trees are buckling the sidewalk, creating dangerous tripping hazards. They are also compromising sight-distance.
