From Idea to Reality: Here’s How to Get Started

Building an ADU is a big project, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. Whether you’re using a pre-approved plan or creating something custom, this guide will help you plan with confidence.

Step 1: Check What’s Possible on Your Property

Start by confirming your property is eligible for an ADU.  Consider:

  • Lot size and zoning
  • Existing buildings or features (slopes, streams, trees)
  • Setbacks and height limits

Step 3: Consider Your Timeline

The process from idea to move-in can take a while. The permitting process for a standard ADU generally takes approximately 3 months with additional time for design and construction. A pre-approved DADU application will take less time.

Step 4: Build Your Team

Most homeowners benefit from hiring at least one professional:

  • Designer or architect
  • Permit consultant
  • Builder or contractor
  • Lender or loan officer
