KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Kirkland Police Department (KPD) is hosting an upcoming Guns for Gift Cards event, where Kirkland community members can exchange unwanted guns for gift cards. The event will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Kirkland Justice Center, located at 11750 NE 118th Street.

“These events are a great incentive for Kirkland residents to voluntarily turn in guns they no longer want or need,” said Councilmember Neal Black. “Fewer unwanted guns means a reduced likelihood of accidental injuries and deaths, deaths from suicide, and theft of unsecured firearms.”

Guns for Gift Cards is part of the City of Kirkland’s broader efforts to reduce gun violence and prevent firearms from being stolen, misused, or involved in tragic accidents or suicides. Each unwanted firearm turned in is one less weapon that could potentially cause harm in the community.

To participate, community members will need to provide proof of Kirkland residency, such as a utility bill. Police staff will only visually verify an address to confirm Kirkland residency and will not record any identifying information. No registration is required, and participant identity remains otherwise anonymous.

Upon arrival, residents are asked to stay in their vehicles. All firearms must be unloaded and stored either in the trunk or the backseat—always out of arm’s reach. An officer will remove the firearm(s) from the vehicle. In exchange, participants will receive a Visa gift card ranging from $25 to $250, depending on the firearm.

Community members can generally turn in up to 10 firearms. Event staff may adjust this limit based on the number and type of firearms submitted, the level of community participation, and the available inventory of gift cards. KPD staff will make the final determinations regarding firearm eligibility, gift card amounts, and participation.

Please note that security cameras are in operation at the Kirkland Justice Center for public safety.
