The Kirkland Police Department (KPD) invites Kirkland residents and business community to participate in its annual Community Police Academy. The 7-week series begins September 28 through November 9 and is meant to give participants a firsthand look at the inner-workings of the KPD.

“Public safety is more than just responding to calls,” said Deputy Mayor Jay Arnold. “The City’s approach to community policing focuses on building relationships, and programs like Community Police Academy provide an in-depth way for our community to learn about what police operations are all about.”

Community Police Academy is taught by Kirkland police officers and department staff, each with a different area of expertise such as Investigations, SWAT, Use of Force, Traffic, the School Resource Officer Program and our K-9 unit. Instruction combines in-class lectures with hands-on activities including live training simulations and a mock investigation scenario.

“We’re excited to once again offer this in-person class for community members,” said Kirkland Police Chief Cherie Harris. “Participants will learn about a variety of duties that officers perform every day to keep our community safe. They’ll hear about patrol training, detective work, de-escalation training and also get to meet our K-9 officer - while getting to know our police instructors along the way.”

Kirkland Community Police Academy is 7-week program beginning September 28 through November 9. Classes are held each Wednesday from 6pm to 9pm.

Class will be limited to 12 participants. Due to limited space, participants must be able to commit to attending each class in the 7-week program.
