The City of Kirkland is temporarily hosting seven passenger vehicles from the Lake Washington United Methodist Church Safe Parking program. The vehicles will have reserved spots in City Hall’s Wester Lot for approximately one month while our partners at LWUMC repave their parking lot. The City is one of several community partners who are serving as temporary satellite sites while the paving project is underway. The program participants will return to the LWUMC parking lot when the repaving is complete, currently anticipated around early July.
For years, LWUMC has offered its parking lot as a safe place for community members experiencing homelessness to park and sleep in their cars without fear of tickets or harassment. All program participants go through a short intake process, including a background check.
All City resources are coordinating to support program participants during this temporary relocation of the Safe Parking program, including the Homeless Assistance and Response Team, the Mobile Integrated Health Unit with Kirkland Fire, and the Kirkland Police Department.
