A new fire station east of I-405 was an important element of the 2014 Fire Strategic Plan. The City of Kirkland has identified the property located at 13118 121st Way NE as a preferred site for future relocation of Fire Station 27 to the east side of I-405. Studies conducted by the City since the annexation of Kingsgate, North Juanita Hill and Finn Hill have demonstrated that this property is a necessary location for a new fire station to replace the aging existing Station 27 (currently at 11210 NE 132nd St.) in a better location to serve the community. “Relocating Fire Station 27 at 13118 121st Way NE will allow the Kirkland Fire Department to better serve residential and retail development in Totem Lane and neighborhoods in northeast Kirkland,” said Chief Joe Sanford. “A new fire station at this location will result in shorter response times for these community members, which can be greatly beneficial for saving lives and protecting property. The new station will also improve firefighters’ safety and performance with a more modern facility that is seismically sound and with the latest ventilated systems.” Some of the factors that determine a suitable location include population density, response times, traffic reports, and high value districts. The property meets the criteria to service the residents and commercial properties such as the Village at Totem Lake in the northeast portion of Kirkland. Building a Fire Station, and potentially related public facilities, on the property, in addition to the construction of Fire Station 24 in Juanita, will improve the fire department’s response times and provide the residents of Kirkland with better service. “The City Council is pleased to be taking this key first step forward toward making a new Fire Station 27 a reality,” said Mayor Penny Sweet. “The safety of our residents is our top priority and this project will allow us to better serve our community members and businesses in northeast Kirkland.” Staff initiated negotiations with the property owner in 2017 and have reached the terms for a purchase and sale agreement including a purchase offer of $5,560,000 based on a fair market appraisal. The purchase is expected to be funded in the near-term using an interfund loan. Long-term funding for the property and construction of the new station are expected to be part of a ballot measure planned for Fall 2020.
