As part of a larger effort to make Totem Lake a walkable, vibrant, and green urban center, the City of Kirkland is improving the 124th Avenue Northeast corridor between Northeast 116th Street and Northeast 124th Street. This project, along with other efforts in the area, will enhance connectivity to the Village at Totem Lake, Totem Lake Park and other local hubs.

The 124th Avenue Northeast improvements, between Northeast 116th and 124th streets, will:

Widen the roadway to five lanes
Establish more than 40 pedestrian lights
Enhance transit stops
Upgrade water and sewer mains
Widen and complete sidewalks along both sides of corridor
Create buffered, sidewalk-level bicycle lanes

Weekly updates

(May 8, 2025) -- Reed Excavating is planning on May 12 to pave a base layer of asphalt along 124th Avenue Northeast's northbound lane, between Northeast 116th and 124th streets.

The contractor will use lane-shifts to keep travels lanes open in both directions.

Reed Excavating will close for up to two hours business' driveways along the northbound lane.

Later in mid-June, however, Reed Excavating is planning to close the entire roadway for a day so its crews can apply the final layer of asphalt along the same section of 124th Avenue Northeast.

The 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. closure will allow the contractor to pave the roadway with one, continuous mat, devoid of cold joints that can undermine the street's structural integrity.

Kirkland's staff will post the detour route to this page when it becomes available.

Working hours

Reed Excavating's crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, until June 2025.

January closure of Northeast 120th Street

Reed Excavating is working with Puget Sound Energy to schedule a one-week closure at the 124th Avenue Northeast’s intersection with Northeast 120th Street.

The closure will likely occur in late January or early February.

During the closure, Kirkland’s contractor will relocate the Northeast 120th Street traffic signal to accommodate the widened roadway.

The Northshore Utility District will capitalize on that week as well to upgrade sewer utilities within the closure area.

Meanwhile, the contractor continues to make progress on a variety of tasks.
