2021 Washington State Energy Code - Residential Provisions*:
The Washington State University Energy Program provides support to those who use the residential sections of the WSEC. You may access their support in the following ways:
*Residential buildings include
- Detached one- and two-family dwellings.
- Multiple single-family dwellings (townhouses).
- Group R-3 occupancy areas in buildings three stories or less in height above grade plane whose dwelling units are accessed direction from the exterior.
- Group R-2 occupancy areas in buildings three stories or less in height above grade plane whose dwelling units are accessed directly from the exterior.
- Accessory structures to residential buildings.
Group R-2 buildings with dwelling units accessed from interior corridors or other interior spaces are not residential buildings.
Group R-2 occupancy areas with dwelling units accessed from enclosed interior corridors or other enclosed interior spaces must comply with the Washington State Energy Code (WSEC) - Commercial Provisions. Other Group R-2 occupancy areas are permitted to comply with the WSEC - Commercial Provisions, in lieu of the WSEC - Residential Provisions. EXCEPTION: Water heaters that each serve only an individual Group R-2 dwelling unit in a building three stories or less above grade plane are permitted to comply with the requirements of the WSEC - Residential Provisions.
Residential occupancy buildings that do not fall within the definition above are governed by the Commercial Provisions.
