KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Kirkland City Council is recruiting interested community members to draft the statements that would appear in the voters’ pamphlet both for and against a potential November 2023 Parks and Recreation ballot measure. The City Council has not yet approved a draft or final legislative action to place the Levy Lid Lift on the November 7, 2023 General Election ballot but may consider doing so at its July 5 or 18, 2023 regular meetings.  Given the tight timelines required by King County Elections, the City Council determined it was prudent to begin recruitment for potential Pro and Con statement committee members now.

More specifically, separate committees will prepare the statements, one committee in favor of, and one committee against, the ballot measure. Interested residents should contact the Kirkland City Clerk’s Office at (425) 587-3197 or KAnderson@kirklandwa.gov for more information on the committees and how to apply.  Applications will be accepted until the deadline of 4 p.m., Wednesday, July 12, 2023. The City Council will potentially make the Committee appointments at its July 18, 2023 meeting.

The committees, which would consist of no more than three members each, would be formed to prepare arguments, each of which are limited to 200 words.  The “Statement For” and the “Statement Against” (in addition to rebuttals of the opposing statements) would appear in the King County Local Voters’ Pamphlet for the November 7, 2023 General Election.  Arguments would be submitted to King County Elections no later than 4:30 p.m., August 8, 2023.

Arguments prepared by the Pro and Con Committees will be made available to the opposing committees for rebuttal after the 4:30 p.m., August 8, 2023 deadline, and 75 word statements rebutting (optional) the argument made by the opposition shall be submitted no later than 4:30 p.m., August 10, 2023.
