Kirkland, WA – On Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at approximately 2:45 p.m., Kirkland Police Officers responded to a traffic collision in the Totem Lake neighborhood involving a dirt bike and a vehicle in the 12500 block of NE 132nd Street.

Investigators determined that a 16-year-old was riding an unlicensed dirt bike and performing a wheelie when he struck the driver-side passenger door of a Mini Cooper. No one inside the vehicle was injured. The dirt bike rider sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Harborview Medical Center. The road was closed for several hours while officers completed a thorough collision investigation.

The Kirkland Police Department has seen an increase in reckless riding on dirt bikes and other e-cycles by young riders. This incident serves as an important reminder that dirt bikes (including electric dirt bikes) are considered off-road recreation vehicles and must follow state regulations for safe and legal operation. Unlicensed riders are not allowed to ride dirt bikes, motorcycles, or e-motorcycles on public roadways. For more information about e-cycle rules, visit kirklandwa.gov/ebikes.
