KIRKLAND, Wash. – Not only is it stunning, convenient, and fun, but the Totem Lake Connector Bridge is also award-winning!
On February 2, Kirkland's iconic Totem Lake Connector Bridge received a 2024 Washington Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). Considered the "Academy Awards" of Engineering, these prestigious awards offer engineers well-deserved recognition for their accomplishments and contributions in the field of engineering.
"After years of work conceptualizing, designing, and constructing the Totem Lake Connector bridge, we’re so proud of our staff and the team at COWI for this worthy recognition," said Kirkland City Councilmember Neal Black. "The TLC is not only an important transportation connection for the community, but it's also an engineering marvel that blends aesthetics, innovation, and sustainability."
In its selection of the TLC bridge, the ACEC described it as "a captivating gateway bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, focusing on enhancing safety and the overall appeal of Totem Lake that beautifully symbolizes a connection between the community and nature."
The City worked with international engineering company COWI on the plan and design of the bridge and to bring the vision of the bridge to life.
The Totem Lake Connector bicycle and pedestrian bridge was opened in summer of 2023, connecting the 5.75-mile Cross Kirkland Corridor and providing safe crossings at one of Kirkland's busiest intersections.
