Kirkland, Wash. – The City of Kirkland has been awarded a $3 million grant from the State Transportation Improvement Board for the 100th Avenue NE Corridor Project.
Elements of the project include widening the roadway from two to five vehicle lanes (two lanes in each direction and a center turn lane), installing new wide sidewalks, separated bike lanes, improved lighting, upgrading stormwater collection and treatment facilities, and optimizing traffic signals.
“The project will improve safety for all users of the corridor, reduce traffic congestion, and upgrade the existing Cedar Creek culvert to allow for additional lanes and improved access for salmon and trout swimming upstream,” said Mayor Penny Sweet. “We are grateful for the funding from the State Transportation Improvement Board which will allow the City to complete all aspects of this project, which covers the northern portions of the 100th Ave Corridor. This work will provide benefits to all of the corridor’s users.”
Construction will begin in summer 2020 on one of the 100th Avenue Northeast Improvements project’s most ambitious tasks: reconstruction of the Cedar Creek culvert. The existing five-decade-old box culvert is in poor condition and blocks salmon and trout from swimming upstream and limits the roadway’s width to three lanes.
