KIRKLAND, Wash. – The City of Kirkland is joining other regional agencies in urging community members to take voluntary measures to conserve water. Although Seattle’s regional water supply had looked good through the summer, extended dry conditions have drawn down Seattle’s reservoirs faster than normal.
The mountain reservoirs on average receive 26 inches of rainfall from May through September, which helps to replenish supply. However, only a quarter of that amount of rain fell this spring and summer. The rain expected over the next week will be a start to replenishing reservoir levels, although extended forecasts show potential for continued dry weather this fall.
Suggested water conservation measures include reducing outdoor water usage, fixing leaks, taking shorter showers, and turning off the tap while brushing teeth or shaving. By making small changes to daily habits, residents and businesses can make a big difference in reducing water consumption and helping to mitigate the effects of the dryer conditions.
In addition to individual efforts, the City of Kirkland is also taking action to conserve water. This includes limiting non-essential water uses in City operations and increasing public awareness about the importance of water conservation.
Community members are encouraged to visit the Cascade Water Alliance website at cascadewater.org for more information about voluntary water conservation measures and to stay up to date on any developments related to the drought.
