Join the 2025 Community Police Academy
Kirkland, WA – The Kirkland Police Department (KPD) is now accepting applications for its 2025 Community Police Academy, an interactive program that gives community members a behind-the-scenes look at how Kirkland police officers, corrections officers and professional staff work to keep the city safe. Over eight weeks, participants will meet the people behind the badge, learn about the department’s specialized units, and take part in hands-on activities that bring police work to life. Topics include de-escalation, investigations, SWAT, drones, traffic safety, the Community Resource Officer program, and KPD’s K-9 team. “If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to work in law enforcement, the Community Police Academy is your front-row seat,” said Councilmember John Tymczyszyn. “You’ll meet the officers and staff who serve our city and gain insight into the work they do to serve and protect our community.” The 2025 Community Police Academy runs Wednesdays from 5 to 8 p.m., September 17 through November 5. The program is open to people 21 and older who live or work in Kirkland and have no prior felony convictions. Space is limited to 20 participants, and attendance at all sessions is required. Participation is free, but an application and background check are required. The deadline to apply is 12 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27, 2025. Applications can be submitted online and selected participants will be notified of acceptance into the class by email or phone. Learn more about the Kirkland Community Police Academy on the City’s website.
