KIRKLAND, Wash. – On Tuesday, December 10, 2024, the Kirkland City Council adopted the City’s 2044 Comprehensive Plan. Building on the City’s prior 2035 Comprehensive Plan, the 2044 Plan is the primary citywide guide for how the community grows and works together over the next twenty years. The Plan includes goals and policies that will guide how the City addresses housing, parks, open spaces, sustainability and climate change, economic development, land use, transportation, and other topics.

“The Kirkland we all know and love today didn’t just happen – it was made possible in large part by past efforts like the Comprehensive Plan,” said Kirkland Mayor Kelli Curtis. “Planning for Kirkland’s next 20 years is an incredibly important opportunity. I’m grateful for the two plus years of community conversations and input, countless staff hours, Planning Commission thoughtful deliberations, and City Council decisions that resulted in a sustainable and welcoming vision for the next 20 years of Kirkland. This adopted plan is about building an inclusive community where current and future generations can thrive.”

True to its name, the K2044 Comprehensive Plan covers numerous topics.  The adopted plan includes many policies and goals that embodies Kirkland’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, belonging, and resiliency, including:

  • Meets new state requirements for housing affordability and climate resiliency.

  • Support for sustainable green building, middle housing, and affordable housing by streamlining development review, design review processes, and permit review timing.

  • Emphasizing utility and energy conservation, sustainability, climate resilience, and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Promoting the transition to renewable energy while ensuring the electric grid is stable and can support Kirkland’s needs.

  • Supporting, retaining, and attracting local businesses and growing our vibrant economy.

  • Maintaining and enhancing our highly valued parks, open spaces, and natural resources.

  • Identifying unique characteristics and policies tailored to every Kirkland neighborhood.

  • Focusing needed growth of housing and jobs in the NE 85th Street Station Area, Kirkland’s urban centers of Totem Lake and Greater Downtown, and neighborhood centers.

  • Providing infrastructure and services for current and future community members.

  • Supporting people experiencing life challenges in housing, food insecurity, or behavioral health.
