KIRKLAND, Wash. – The City of Kirkland is launching its new Kirkland Initiative civic engagement program this spring with the goal of diversifying public participation in local government and making City Hall accessible to all.  The City is now accepting applications for the first cohort of the program.

“This is such an exciting civic program. The Kirkland City Council is able to better serve our whole community when diverse voices are heard and residents feel empowered and engaged,” said Councilmember Kelli Curtis. “We do that best when City leaders build relationships and create a sense of belonging with all members of our community. It’s important to demystify how city government works, how to connect with council, and how decisions are made. This meaningful program is an opportunity for community members to have important conversations with those that serve them."

The program is an interactive 8-week series that will include:

  • learning the foundations of government functions and programs,
  • engaging in dialogue to share feedback, and
  • participating in activities like interviews and role playing to better understand decision making processes

The creation of a civic leadership program is an objective of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Roadmap with the aim of welcoming more voices into City government discussions.

“For community members who are BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, recently relocated, or have an interest in local government and are unsure how to engage – please apply,” said Curtis.  “We want to know you and help you get involved.”
