KIRKLAND, Wash. – The City of Kirkland invites the community to celebrate the grand reopening of the Everest Park Playground on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at 1 p.m. Join City leaders, partners, and community members for a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the exciting transformation of one of Kirkland’s most beloved play spaces.
Originally installed in 2001, the previous Everest Park playground was just 3,850 square feet and was one of the smallest in Kirkland’s park system. This spring, the City replaced and expanded the playground, adding modern, inclusive, and dynamic features designed to meet the needs of all visitors.
“Parks are places where community happens, and this new playground is a shining example of that,” said Councilmember Neal Black. “By listening to kids and designing a space that reflects their creativity, we’ve created a playground that is not only fun, but inclusive.”
The new design includes multiple climbing structures and a variety of swings -- ideas that came directly from community youth during the planning process. A fun oversized baseball glove slide pays homage to the park’s baseball legacy. And new accessible pathways ensure the space is welcoming to all.
“The new Everest Playground nearly doubles the size of the original and adds play opportunities that are inclusive, imaginative, and challenging,” said Parks and Community Services Director Lynn Zwaagstra. “We’re proud to offer a space where all children and families can connect and play together.”
The project was funded in part by the voter-approved 2020-2025 King County Parks Levy, which supports parks, trails, and open spaces across the region.
The ribbon cutting will include a brief ceremony, time to explore the new play features, and light refreshments. Families, caregivers, and kids of all ages are encouraged to attend. Everest Park is located at 500 8th Street South, Kirkland, WA 98033.
