The community is invited to celebrate the completion of the 100th Avenue Northeast Corridor Improvements Project with a special Blue Friday ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, December 12. Festivities begin at 12:45 p.m. with the ribbon cutting, followed by a short walk to the new HAWK crossing at 1 p.m. for photos with Blitz, the official Seahawks mascot. Attendees are encouraged to show their Seahawks pride by wearing blue and green, bringing pompoms or foam fingers, and joining in the celebratory spirit. Event parking is available in the gravel lot at 14207 100th Ave NE.
“This project has transformed the 100th Avenue Northeast corridor into a safer, more efficient street for everyone, no matter how they travel,” said Councilmember Jon Pascal. “It provides improved mobility and safer connections for people walking, biking, taking transit, and driving and will benefit our community for years to come.”
The project delivers several major upgrades along one of Kirkland’s busiest north-south streets, including:
- Sidewalk-level bicycle lanes—a new standard for Kirkland arterials—providing a safer, more comfortable option for cyclists. This design also proved cost-effective due to the lower cost of non-polluting, sidewalk-level surfaces.
- Wider sidewalks separated by stormwater-retentive medians, improving walkability and sustainability.
- Upgraded water, sewer, and stormwater utilities, ensuring long-term reliability.
- Intelligent transportation system enhancements, modernizing the corridor’s traffic signal operations for safer and more efficient travel.
The project stems from the 2014 100th Avenue NE Corridor Study, initiated after Kirkland’s 2011 annexation of North Juanita and Finn Hill. That study examined the corridor between NE 132nd and NE 145th streets and identified improvements that ultimately became three capital projects:
- The Cedar Creek Culvert project which was completed in 2021,
- The newly completed improvements between NE 139th and NE 145th Streets, and
- A future project between NE 132nd and NE 139th Streets.
Together, these investments support a continuous, multimodal corridor that better serves residents, businesses, commuters, and visitors while strengthening connections to Bellevue, Bothell, and the greater Eastside.
