Project
The City's Code Enforcement Program helps protect public safety and the environment by investigating possible violations of City rules, public health laws, and other regulations. To improve this work, the City is updating its Code Enforcement rules (Chapter 1.12 of the Kirkland Municipal Code). These rules describe how the City responds when someone violates building, land use, environmental, or other City codes.
What This Update Will Do
The updated rules will:
- Make the enforcement process easier to understand
- Focus staff resources on the most serious issues
- Provide clearer steps for notices, fines, appeals and follow-up
- Modernize tools so staff can respond effectively
- Improve fairness, transparency, and consistency
Why This Matters
Clearer rules help the City:
- Respond faster to urgent concerns
- Support voluntary compliance
- Treat everyone fairly
- Protect public safety, the environment, and neighborhood quality
