Designing an ADU from scratch can take months and cost thousands. Kirkland’s Pre-Approved Detached ADU Plans program helps you skip ahead. These plans have already been reviewed for compliance with City rules, meaning you can focus on what matters most: building your ADU.

What Are Pre-Approved Plans?

Pre-approved Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (DADU) plans are:

  • Created by experienced architects and designers
  • Reviewed by the City for code compliance
  • Ready for faster permit approval (as little as a few weeks)

How to Use a Pre-Approved Plan

  1. Choose a plan from the City’s gallery
  2. Contact the designer listed to license the plan (up to $1,000)
  3. Work with the designer to adapt the plan to your property
  4. Submit your permit with confidence and clarity
  5. Build and move in faster

You can still submit custom plans.  Pre-approved plans are just one option.
