Structure Type

Structure Type Definitions

When submitting an application online, selecting the correct type of structure is critical to the processing of the permit. Generally, the selected Project Type must align with the overall building, not the location of the work itself or if the unit is owned individually. All structure types are based on the most recently adopted version of International Residential Code (IRC) and International Building Code (IBC).

Single Family

A single-family residence is any building with 1 or 2 dwelling units. These may be referred to as townhomes, accessory dwelling units, or a duplex. Units may be located side-by-side but may not be stacked. Select this Project Type for any buildings or structures accessory to a single family (i.e. carport or shed).

Multi-Family

A multi-family residence is any building with 3 or more units. This includes condominium units within apartment buildings and townhome units in buildings with 3 or more dwelling units.

Mixed Use

A mixed use building contains both residential and non-residential uses located within the same building.

Nonresidential

Any building that does not include residential uses/dwelling units. Examples include commercial businesses, site shoring, and other structures such as pools, fences, and stormwater detention vaults. Do not select Nonresidential for structures accessory to a single-family.
