Plastic bags cannot be recycled in your curbside recycling containers because they cause significant problems at the recycling facility, wrapping around the machinery and halting sorting operations. You can drop off clean plastic bags and film at special collection locations to be recycled. Plastic bags can also be thrown away in your garbage.
Many grocery stores accept plastic bags for recycling. Bundle your clean bread bags, newspaper bags, produce bags, dry cleaning bags, and more to return to stores. See all accepted items, and find more locations beyond Kirkland, at plasticfilmrecycling.org.
Check at your preferred grocery store to see if they accept plastic bags and film for recycling (often a drop box in the customer service area). These locations were confirmed to have plastic bag recycling stations as of March 2019:
1221 120th Ave NE
Drop-off bin located on left hand side of main entry foyer
Rose Hill Safeway
12519 NE 85th St
Kirkland Urban QFC
425 Urban Plz
Drop-off bin located in south entrance foyer
Plastic bags/film are accepted, as well as StyrofoamTM, at this special collection event hosted by the City of Kirkland. Materials must be clean, dry and empty, and should be sorted by type and color. See the StyroFest guidelines and 2020 dates (PDF, 327kb) for details. The event is open to Kirkland residents only due to costs and capacity limitations.
