Safe and Active Transportation

The City of Kirkland wants to make walking and biking safer, easier, and more accessible for everyone. Safe and active transportation enables people of all ages and abilities/disabilities to get from here to there safely. The City is also continuing to evaluate how to improve how to make Kirkland’s entire transportation system safer.

Active Transportation Plan – As more people recognize the health benefits of regular exercise in their everyday lives, the number of people who walk and bike will increase. The TMP focuses on improving the safety of people walking and biking in Kirkland.

Safer Routes to School – When children walk, bike and ride the bus to school, it benefits their physical and social health and also improves circulation and safety in and around schools. Action plans for Kirkland’s elementary, middle and high schools will identify steps to make walking, biking and riding the bus to school safer, more convenient and fun.

Vision Zero – Safety for all modes of transportation is a key component in the quality of life of those who live, work and play in Kirkland. Vision Zero seeks to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries.
