Kirkland Fire is part of the Eastside Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Consortium that consists of 8 departments that pool resources and provide trained hazmat technician personnel to mitigate hazmat incidents. The Hazmat team consists of one hazmat unit with level A capabilities, sampling, product identification, radiation monitoring, containment, confinement capabilities, and decontamination.
The team has 2 mobile decontamination units for Multi-Casualty Incident (MCI) responses. These units can be deployed to scenes and serve to decontaminate ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients.
There are 50+ team members regionally that are trained to the technician level that can mitigate all types of incidents. These personnel are paged out when an incident occurs and respond to the scene. As team members arrive they fill vital positions in the command structure and within the hazardous materials branch. Less technical roles are handled by operations personnel overseen by a hazmat technician.
