youth helping to restore Kirkland's parksKIRKLAND, Wash.– Volunteers are wanted in four Kirkland parks for a fun few hours of forest restoration and to celebrate Green Kirkland Day on Saturday, November 14. The first annual Green Kirkland Day, is a great opportunity for community members to connect with nature and to celebrate the dedication and accomplishments of restoration volunteers throughout the year, working towards the Green Kirkland Partnership’s (GKP) goal of restoring over 480 acres of publicly-owned forests and natural areas. Green Kirkland Day’s main site, with space for 150 volunteers, will be at Crestwoods Park. There will also be smaller events at Juanita Beach Park, Josten Park (formerly North Juanita Open Space) and McAuliffe Park. Event partners include EarthCorps, Forterra, Kirkland Parks Foundation and Seattle Tilth.

City of Kirkland Parks and Community Services Director, Jennifer Schroder, reflects that “the community support for restoring Kirkland’s forests and other natural areas is inspiring and we hope this to be the beginning of a yearly tradition in the City.” In 2014, volunteers contributed 8,900 hours towards habitat restoration activities with the GKP.

All community members are welcome to volunteer and no experience is necessary. Tools and potted native plants will be provided as well as instructions on how to remove invasive plants and replace with native plants. A free pizza lunch will be provided to volunteers at Crestwoods and Juanita Beach parks thanks to a donation by The Watershed Company.

“The support and enthusiasm for these events clearly demonstrate that building community and building healthy forests go hand in hand; you can’t have one without the other,” said Joanna Nelson de Flores, Forterra Green Cities Program Director. “Volunteers are such a crucial part of the positive transformation that is happening in Green Cities across the region.”
