KIRKLAND, Wash. - The Kirkland Parks and Community Services Department’s scholarship program now includes more opportunities for Kirkland residents to receive income-based scholarships to access all programs.

Kirkland residents, regardless of age or ability, can now apply for scholarships to cover 50 percent, 75 percent or 95 percent of any Parks Department recreation program. Previously scholarships were only available up to 25 or 50 percent of the cost of the program. All scholarships are based on income verification. Scholarship applications are available online at http://bit.ly/KirklandRecScholarship

“Income shouldn’t be a barrier to people being active,” said Councilmember Toby Nixon. “We hope that these scholarships will help ensure that every Kirkland resident has the opportunity to access programs where they can be active and social in a positive environment.”

Funding for the increased scholarship opportunities have largely come from donations from corporate employee giving programs that have been collected over time. However, the new scholarship program makes it possible for any community members to donate to the scholarship fund.

“Donating to the scholarship fund is a great way for community members to support other community members. Your donation will have a tangible impact on one of your neighbors,” said Nixon.

Scholarships are available to all residents of the city of Kirkland.  Residents may apply for scholarships for themselves or any member of their household of which they have guardianship and verification.

Residents who wish to donate to the scholarship program can do this online through the City website at http://bit.ly/KirklandDonate.
