Council Votes to Begin Construction on Downtown Employee Parking Lot

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Construction could begin as early as February on an 84-stall parking lot on Third Avenue to be used as downtown employee parking during the day and then general parking after 5 p.m. on evenings and all day on weekends. At their January 3 meeting, the City Council voted to approve a contract for construction of the lot which will be complete in summer 2017.

The layout and intended use of the parking lot remains identical to the lot discussed throughout the spring by an advisory group of nearby residents and business owners, although the original advertisement for a parking lot with a permeable surface garnered bids from just two contractors. Both prices exceeded the project’s budget. That led City Council in August to reject those bids and instruct its staff to re-scope the project.

Kirkland’s staff re-scoped the parking lot creating a more competitive project, which garnered the bids of 10 contractors. The winning bid met the project’s budget.
