KIRKLAND, Wash. – In response to recommendations from Public Health – Seattle & King County, and out of an abundance of caution, the City of Kirkland will be cancelling most recreation programming and classes and closing community centers to the public starting Saturday, March 7 through Tuesday, March 31.

Classes scheduled for Friday, March 6, will proceed. The end of March was selected because nearly all winter programs end by March 31. The Peter Kirk Community Center and the North Kirkland Community Center will be closed to the public, including private facility rentals. Spring and Summer class registration is scheduled to proceed on March 19. Refunds for programs will be handled on a case by case basis.

“This was a very difficult decision for our City leadership because our programming is part of our quality of life in Kirkland, but we believe it is the right decision to help prevent the spread of COVID-19,” said Parks and Community Services Director Lynn Zwaagstra. “We appreciate the community’s understanding and our staff are available to work with you to reschedule or cancel your events as appropriate.”

Currently, all athletic field rentals are available, however the City will refund field rental fees if any sports leagues would like to cancel their reservations.

The City is honoring rentals of facilities such as Heritage Hall, the Al Locke Pavilion at Marina Park, and picnic shelters. Staff will inform the event organizers of the Public Heath – Seattle & King County recommendations and let them decide whether they wish to cancel. Refunds will be provided if applicable.

The City’s intent is to launch the Spring and Summer programs on April 1 as scheduled, depending on the status of COVID-19 and its impact the community.
