Kirkland Orca Swim Team and Craze Summer Swim League

The City of Kirkland offers a recreational swim team that participates in the Craze Summer Swim League. Our team focuses on developing fundamental skills. We also want to instill the value of a recreational activity that lasts a lifetime.

My child is returning to the Orca Swim Team, when can I register my child

If your child swam on our swim team in 2023, they are eligible to return to Orca Swim Team. Returning swimmer registration opens March 20, 2024 for Kirkland residents and March 21, 2024 for non-Kirkland residents. Registration closes June 3, 2024.

How can a new participant join the team?

We host new participant tryouts on Saturday, June 8, 2024.   We do not offer optional dates or times for tryouts.  Please do not register your child prior to tryouts.

You can register your child for tryouts. this is not required but encouraged. Registration for tryouts does not guarantee your child will make the team, but this does help us know how many we can expect at Tryouts.

Tryout Schedule:
9:00 AM for Ages 13-17  Course # 19067
9:30 AM for Ages 9-12     Course # 19068
10:00 AM for Ages 7-8     Course # 19069
10:30 AM for Age  6         Course # 19070

Once the participant has passed the tryouts, names will be placed into a lottery, divided up by age group and gender. Names will be drawn, filling the available spaces on the team. Lottery drawing happen 10 minutes after the tryout window is finished.

Tryouts consist of the following prerequisites based on their age as of July 1, 2024  

  • Participants ages 6- 8 must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle and 25 yards of backstroke.
  • Participants ages 9 –17 must be able to swim 50 yards of freestyle, 50 yards of backstroke, and 25 yards of breaststroke.

Is there a meeting to get information about the team once my child is on the team?

We will have an informational meeting on Thursday, June 20, 6:00-7:00 PM at the Peter Kirk Pool. This will go over all aspects of being on our swim team, along with important dates, practice schedules, meet schedules, volunteer requirements, etc.  Do we as a parent have to volunteer for this team? YES! There will be approximately 6-8 hours of volunteer work for parents throughout the season. Parent volunteers are crucial to the success of home swim meets, assisting with timing, ribbons, and staging swimmers. Sign up information will be shared as the season goes on via email with all registered parents and participants.

When are Practices?

• Practices occur Monday – Thursday mornings beginning Monday, June 24th and ending Thursday, August 10th.
• Practices consist of both dry land conditioning and in water swimming development

Practice Times

  • 6:45 AM – 7:40 AM – Boys & Girls Ages 13 –17
  • 7:25 AM – 8:20 AM – Boys & Girls Ages 9-12
  • 8:05 AM – 8:50 AM – Boys & Girls Ages 6 – 8


When are Meets?

Meets are on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays throughout the season, with the Craze Invitational ending our season.  Our two home meets will be held on Friday evenings, We will have a home meets on Friday, July 19, and August 2.
