Section 8 Voucher Nondiscrimination

Last updated March 20, 2013
Project Description
In November 2012, the Kirkland City Council considered a proposed ordinance prohibiting landlords from refusing to rent residential units based solely on a request by a rental applicant to use a Section 8 rental voucher to cover part of the rent.  The background materials provided to the Council for that meeting can be found at November 7, 2012 City Council meeting (PDF - 1.44 MB).  The Council asked staff to conduct further public outreach before bringing the issue back to them in early 2013.
Project Participation
On January 23, 2013, the City held a community meeting to share feedback it had received and to hear additional concerns that can be addressed in the draft ordinance before it is considered by the City Council.  Twenty-five people attended that meeting including ten Kirkland residents, representatives of multifamily rental housing industry groups, affordable housing advocates and King County Housing Authority staff.  Twenty-two people attended a second community meeting on February 26, 2013.
