The City of Kirkland has started planning for a new indoor recreation facility. Kirkland is growing, and citizens are asking about more recreation opportunities for children, teens, families, adults and seniors. An indoor recreation facility offering activities for all ages will open new opportunities and help build a stronger community and continue to advance our city-wide initiative of community wellness.
Work is just beginning on a planning for an indoor recreation facility. The City has commissioned a design team led by Opsis Architecture to work with residents and staff to plan and design the new indoor recreation facility.
Kirkland Indoor Recreation Facility Summary
- A new indoor recreation facility is proposed for Kirkland – planning is under way
- Possible spaces that could be included within the building include a gymnasium, recreation activity pool, fitness facility, therapy pool, and more
- Estimated costs and funding sources to build the facility are not yet known
- Funding sources may include public / private partnerships, sale of general obligation bonds, sponsorships and donations, public funding.
- Facility operations are envisioned to be largely self-supporting, with a significant portion of ongoing operating costs to be borne by users.
Planning Process
The initial phase of the indoor recreation facility planning process will take six months to complete and is just getting underway. Citizens are invited to join in this exciting opportunity to create a lasting investment in quality of life for current and future generations. Community forums, open house events, and other avenues will promote citizen participation in the indoor recreation facility planning.

The City of Kirkland hired Opsis Architecture for the concept planning and design of the indoor recreation facility project. Opsis Architecture was the selected firm following a formal consultant selection process.
