For Next Day Inspection Requests: Call 1-866-458-7354 by 3 p.m. or request online at My Building Permit by 3 p.m. for next business day inspections.
Permit applications that require plan review will be accepted 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Building Services Division of the Fire & Building Department ensures the safety and welfare of those who live, work and visit Kirkland by regulating the construction, use, and occupancy of buildings and structures. Building Services staff ensures that building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing standards and other codes for construction are met through plan review, permit issuance and on-site inspections.
To assist you with your new home construction or remodel, commercial building development or tenant improvement, Building Services Division staff will gladly help you with:
Plan review, when required, is conducted to ensure code compliance with the International Building, Residential, Plumbing, Mechanical Codes and other codes associated with energy, electrical, fuel and other construction and development codes as adopted in the
Kirkland Municipal Code. This review ensures your project meets code requirements and is safe before construction starts. Plans Examiners review your submitted plans for in compliance with structural, architectural, and fire safety requirements.
Permit intake and routing is conducted by Permit Technicians who ensure that permit applications are processed properly and routed to Building, Fire, Planning and Public Works staff for appropriate review. Permit Technicians also track the permit and archive the records when your project is complete.
Inspections are conducted by Building and Electrical Inspectors to ensure compliance with plans, approved are conducted by Building and Electrical Inspectors to ensure compliance with plans, approved permits and code requirements.
The City of Kirkland is one of a few unique agencies in the State that it has certified Electrical Inspectors; most jurisdictions direct such inspections through the State Department of Labor & Industries.

The City of Kirkland is a founding member of MyBuildingPermit.com which is an alliance of participating cities and Snohomish County that share resources to provide online permitting and to provide consistency in the enforcement of the construction codes. Only ‘over the counter’ permits can be obtained at this time but we are working on an online option for all permits.

Pre-submittal conferences are held between those interested in developing property or applying for a development permit, and the City staff who will ultimately review the development permit. The purpose of the conference is to determine the feasibility of your project, identify potential road blocks, and review information required for a complete application. Applicable policies, codes, and standards will be identified at the conference. Code Violation Investigations regarding non-compliance with construction codes are conducted in cooperation with the City’s Code Enforcement Division. You can submit a complaint online or contact Code Enforcement at 425-587-3225.
Request for public records, such as permit applications and plans, are processed within the Department upon receipt of a Request for Public Records form(PDF). This request can be faxed to 425-587-3651.
