April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, April 29 is Stand Against Racism Day

KIRKLAND, Wash. – At the April 19, 2016 city council meeting, the Kirkland Mayor Amy Walen proclaimed April as “Sexual Assault Awareness Month” and April 29 as “Stand Against Racism Day.” Both proclamations were made to raise awareness about important issues affecting the community of Kirkland and the nation as a whole.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a nationwide campaign of the National Sexual Violence Resource Center coordinated locally by the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center (KCSARC). The goal is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and how to prevent it. The King County Sexual Assault Resource Center (KCSARC) offers resources for victims, their families and the community through their resource line (888-99-VOICE) and on their website www.kcsarc.org. As Kirkland Council Member Shelley Kloba read in the proclamation, “We must work together to educate our community about sexual violence prevention, to support survivors, and to speak out against harmful attitudes and actions.”

Stand Against Racism is a signature campaign of YWCA USA to build community among those who work for racial justice and to raise awareness about the negative impact of institutional and structural racism in our communities. On the last Friday of April each year, people across the United States of America gather with the YWCA to spread awareness about the root causes of racism and encourage conversations among diverse communities.  Kirkland Council Member Dave Asher read from the proclamation, “All citizens regardless of race, creed or ethnicity deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, compassion and justice.”  More information is at standagainstracism.org.
